Open Enrollment Policy

UPDATE May 31, 2024: USD 204 will not have the capacity to accept nonresident students for the 2024-2025 school year. See the Capacity Study document linked below for additional information.

Below is the timeline the district will follow each year to determine enrollment:

  • On or before May 1st of each school year, the Superintendent will present information to the Board of Education on a capacity study to determine the number of open seats potentially available to nonresidents.

    • Capacity will be determined by projected enrollment, student-to-teacher ratio, etc.

  • On or before June 1st, the district will publish the number of open seats potentially available to nonresident students in each grade level or program for each school in the district for the upcoming school year on the school district's website. Application information will also be available on the website.

  • From June 1st through June 30th, district administration will accept applications from nonresident students.

  • If applications do not exceed open seats, students who meet the criteria are accepted.

    • Please refer to the BOE approved policy on the website for criteria.

  • If applications do exceed open seats, a lottery must be held by July 15th.

Continued Enrollment Criteria: Nonresident students who are admitted to the district will be evaluated each spring to determine standing for continued enrollment. Criteria that should be considered:

  • Attendance

  • False or fraudulent information on the application

  • Nonresident student no longer resides in Kansas

  • Behavior

  • Grades

  • The student is regarded to be in good academic standing and is making acceptable progress toward promotion, graduation, and/or IEP goals.
